Donald Lester Carlsen

February 22, 1922 — February 15, 2011

Donald Lester Carlsen, age 88, of La Grande, was born in Ballard, Washington on February 22, 1922. He was fond of saying "2-22-22". He died February 15, 2010 in a local care facility. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Island City Cemetery.

His parents, Lester and Jennie Pauline (Johnson) Carlsen, were first generation Norweigans. Don's family moved to La Grande during his grade school years, attending Greenwood Elementary. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1941, after spending part of his Senior year commercial salmon fishing with his uncle Ben Carlsen.

Don served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He married Annabel Kathryn Lange on March 4, 1943. The coupld spent their entire married life of 67 plus years in La Grande. They had three daughters who attended high school in La Grande. Don retired from the Union Pacific Railroad in 1982. Don and Annabel built seven houses over the years, including a number at the intersection of N Avenue and Alder Street.

Don and Annabel have been active members of the local branch of the Assembly of God Church - The New Life Center. Don's father, Lester Carlsen, began his ministry in La Grande in the late 1920's. Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be given to the New Life Center's Missionary Fund.

Anyone who was familiar with Don knew his joy of activity, fellowship and humor. He went backpacking, skiing, hunting and skiing, always with his wife at his side. All of these endeavors were done with en enthusiasm and delight. He'd smile an impish grin to the ladies, join in a practical joke with the guys, but most importantly he'd blow a kiss to his "Dearie". We will all miss him immensely.

He is survived by his wife, Annabel of La Grande; sister, Lola Mae Holt of Eugene; daughters, Janet Heimigner of Walla Walla, Washington, Susan Sherburn of Portland and Linda Carlsen of La Grande. He was preceded in death by his brother, Warren Carlsen.
