Dianna (Cook) Shaw

May 27, 1944 — November 25, 2010

A. Dianna (Cook) Shaw, 66, of La Grande, died Nov. 25 at her home with her husband, Don, and family by her side.

Her memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church.

Dianna was born April 27, 1944, to Jack and Janice Cates in Vallejo, Calif. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Pendleton. In 1948, she was adopted by her great-aunt and great-uncle, Grace and Walt Garrett, who became her parents and raised her.

Dianna attended Willow Grade School and graduated from La Grande High School in 1962. On Nov. 26, 1962, she married Donald F. Shaw in Lewiston, Idaho. Dianna was a member of the Methodist Church, Wesleyan Circle, Eastern Star and Eastern Oregon Livestock Show.

Those who knew her say she was a devoted wife and mother whose main focus was the care and well being of her family. They say she was a true ranch wife whose greatest joy was cooking comfort food for anyone in her kitchen at meal time.

When not cooking, Dianna worked at various part-time jobs including the Royal Cafe and Sweets Country Meats. She was an Oregon Department of Agriculture brand clerk at the livestock auction and worked with the Forest Service as ground support for forest fires, hauling the crew and groceries.

Dianna was a woman of tradition - breakfast at 6:30 a.m., lunch at high noon and always a trip somewhere near or far on Sunday with Don.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Don; sons, Sam of La Grande, and Luke and his wife, Jhavanna Shaw, of La Grande; daughter, Mary Grace Andersen Urell, and her husband, Shawn, of Riley; five grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank and Young Sook, and their two children; sister, Nancy Ten Eyck and her husband, Dale, of Pendleton; and many unofficially adopted young people who thought of her as "Mom."

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walt and Grace Garrett; and stepbrother, Gene Garrett, who was killed in Okinawa in 1945.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grande Ronde Hospice in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel.
