Dean H. Johnston, 80, of Union and formerly of Summerville died Oct. 18 at Grande Ronde Hospital. Viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel. A celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, also a Loveland Chapel.

Mr. Johnston was born Jan. 4, 1924, in Summerville to Victor H. and Martha Fries Johnston, a pioneer family. He graduated from Imbler High School in 1941 and worked for the U.S. Forest Service. He served in the Navy during World War II and returned to work on the family farm. He became a skilled cabinet maker. On July, 20, 1985, he married Judy Brown in Hood River. He was a lifetime member of the Pleasant Grove Grange and the National Rifle Association. He always had a smile and never hesitated to lend a helping hand. He was known for his sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife of Union; a son-in-law, Gilbert Gutierrez of Mission; a daughter-in-law, Fran Ellis of La Grande; step-children, Tracy Wyllie of Union and Shane Huntsman of Antone, Wash.;seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and other relatives. Two children, Audean Gutierrez and Lynn Johnston, a sister, Bernice Munhall, and a brother, Leighton Johnston, all died earlier.
