David Lyndon Rose, age 87, of La Grande, died Saturday, November 8, 2003 at the Grande Ronde Hospital. A graveside service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at the Island City Cemetery with Rev. Frank Cooke officiating.
Mr. Rose was born on March 15, 1916, the son of James S. and Grace A. (Del) Rose in Pendleton, Oregon. He attended schools at the Mission Indian School and after graduation he went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad and moved to La Grande. During World War II he served with the United States Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was a Sergeant over Red Skeleton and had many stories about that experience. On March 21, 1946 he married Evelyn Tameris in La Grande. After his honorable discharge he returned to La Grande and worked as an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement.
His wife preceded him in death on September 25, 1995.
Mr. Rose was a member of the La Grande Masonic Lodges and the Al Kader Shrine. He was a strong supporter of the Masons and contributed regularly to the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children. He was also a member of the Mt. Emily Chapter Good Sam Club. He will be remembered as a very generous man who helped many people who needed a lift.
Survivors include his sons, Lyndon Rose of Cove and Jerry Bradshaw of Island City; daughter, Marcene Gerlach of Island City; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
