David Leo Fugit

March 2, 1937 — September 26, 2008

David Leo Fugit, 71, of Packwood, Wash., and formerly of La Grande, died Sept. 26 in Packwood.

A memorial was held Oct. 13 at Emerald Downs Racetrack in Auburn, Wash.

David was born in Baker City March 2, 1937. He attended school in Perry from the second grade and graduated high school in La Grande in 1955.

David served in the National Guard and moved to Auburn in 1958. He was a part of the fire department from 1959 through 1989. He spent the next five years as Auburn's director of Disaster Management & planning. He was the first fire marshal for the Emerald Downs Race Track from 1995 to 2007.

David is survived by his wife, Linda Fugit of Packwood; son, Dr. Michael Fugit of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Monica Fugit; two grandchildren; former wife, Joanne (Fugit) Robertson of Laclede, Idaho; sisters, Annie Damon of Medford, Judy Sheppard of Prosser, Wash., and MaLonnie Martin of Portland; sister-in-law, Kathleen M. Burnett; stepson, Paul L. Alvaraz; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the "David Fugit Memorial Fund" at any Sterling Savings Bank. The funds will go toward a memorial bench and plaque at the Emerald Downs Racetrack.
