Daphne Gibson Holmes

February 9, 1913 — December 29, 2004

Daphne Gibson Holmes, age 91, of Riverside California and formerly of Cove and La Grande, died December 29, 2004 at a care center. At her request there will be no funeral. Her ashes will be interred at Cove Cemetery with a graveside service in August.

Mrs. Holmes was born on February 9, 1913, the daughter of Hugo and Ada (Attwell) Gibson in Birmingham, England. The family sailed on The Berengaria to New York City where her father worked as a consulting engineer and inventor. After a divorce she moved with her mother to Tao Tacoma, Washington where she graduated from Annie Wright Seminary. She attended Wells College in Aurora New York and graduated from the University of Washington.

On March 2, 1935 she married John Eugene Holmes and worked for the Roseburg News Review. The couple moved to California in 1948, but returned to Oregon in 1982, first to Island City and then to Cove, where she lived until 1996 when she moved to the Grande Ronde Retirement Residence. She moved to Riverside in September to be near family.

She was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority, PEO and St. Peter's Episcopal Church. She enjoyed her friends and was active in birthday and sewing clubs.

Survivors include her children, John Hollister Holmes of Placentia, California, Nancy Jane Wienenga of San Juan Capistrano, California and Edward Lynn Holmes II of Riverside, California; seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Her husband died earlier.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Episcopal Church in La Grande.
