Clare Witherrite

Clare M. Witherrite, age 86, of Union, died April 21, 2011 at a local care center. A celebration of life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011 at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. Committal and interment will follow at the Union Cemetery.


Clare was born on January 14, 1925 to Lorenze LS Tschetter and Susanna Kleinsassier near Huron, South Dakota. On January 14, 1944 she married Lyal Junior Witherrite in Huran, South Dakota. In 1945 they moved to La Grande and in 1951 they moved to High Valley. In 1985 they moved to Union. She loved gardening, sewing and many other crafts, often selling her items at various church bazaars. She went to school at Country Grade School, Fairfield School, Huron High and Blue Mountain Community College.


Survivors include her daughters and their husbands, Pat and Alvin Hixson and Dori and Phil Hickman, all of La Grande; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; three great grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; one sister; one brother; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death bt her husband, Lyal Witherrite on April 12, 2010, her daughter, Constance Haley on November 19, 1971, great grandson, Dylan Hickman on April 6, 2009 and six siblings as well as her parents.


Those who wish may make contributions in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association or the Ronald McDonald House in care of Daniels~Knopp, 1502 7th Street in La Grande.
