Chester Dale Nice

July 25, 1932 — September 3, 2008

Chester Dale Nice, 76, of La Grande, died Sept. 3 at his home.

The funeral begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Island City. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Viewing will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Loveland Funeral Chapel and at the church in the Relief Society Room at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Dale was born July 25, 1932, to Chester and Hester Ports Nice in Haines. He graduated from Union High School in 1950 and served in the Army from 1953 to 1955. He was stationed in Panama, working as a cook.

He worked at Sweets Meat Co. and then went to work at Safeway as a meat cutter. He was a meat manager by the age of 23 and retired in 1987 after 30 years. He married Marian Lester Gibbs Dec. 7, 1984.

Dale loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved spending time on his land near Clear Creek and teaching his grandchildren how to fish. He spent time at the senior center, dancing and socializing. He was a member of the La Grande chapters of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Elks Lodge No. 251.

He is survived by sisters, Bea Fisher of The Dalles and Leora Menory of Caldwell, Idaho; wife, Marian; children, Kenneth, Steven and his wife, Susan, Linda, Mary and her husband, Glenn, and Jim and his wife, Cathleen; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Lynn Gibbs; daughter Raedene Tetterson; and his in-laws, Dallas and Dorothy Fay Lester.
