Charles Neal VanHousen, 83, of Ukiah, Calif., and formerly of Union died April 17. Burial was at the Ukiah Cemetery.
Mr. VanHousen was born March 8, 1921, to Giles and Edlie VanHousen in Union. He graduated from Union High School in 1939 where he was a star football player and a member of the FFA. He served in the Army during World War II and in 1941 he married Fairy Lucille Wilson. He served as the chief of police in Union, and in 1947 the family moved to Ukiah. He worked for various logging companies in Medocino County, for a welding company, as a cattle rancher, operating heavy equipment for a gravel company, and at his own welding shop. He received a silver buckle from the county fair for improvements to the fairgrounds. He retired in 1990.
He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union, the Ukiah Senior Horseman's Association and the Mendocino County Sheriff's Posse.
Survivors include his wife of Ukiah; children and their spouses, Jim and Janet VanHousen of Covelo, Calif., and Marc and Jeanie VanHousen of Napa, Calif.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; siblings and their spouses, Bob and Cloe VanHousen of Las Vegas, and Donna and Dwight Brooks of Union; and other relatives. His parents; a brother, Bud, and a sister, Verle, all died earlier.
