Charles "Chas" Franklin Summerfield

February 23, 1938 — December 14, 2008

Charles "Chas" Franklin Summerfield, 70, of Pilot Rock, died Dec. 14 at his home of natural causes.

Services will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at Burns Mortuary in Pendleton. A gathering will follow.

Mr. Summerfield (Charlie) was born Feb. 23, 1938, in Pendleton. He was raised in Meacham and rode bus to school in La Grande for the first through eighth grades. He later lived part of the year in La Grande, because of the weather.

He served in the Navy before working for the U.S. Forest Service and later for Union Pacific Railroad.

He married Sharon Shaw in 1966 and later divorced. Charlie loved to spend time in the mountains hunting and fishing. He was never without a "Chas" smile and giggle, not to mention a few fish stories about the one that got away.

Charlie is survived by his four sisters: Judy Oyer, Mary Taylor, Evelyn Greenwell and Nancy Davis; seven nieces; and four nephews.

Charlie was preceded in death by his two brothers, Gerald and Wayne Summerfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to Meacham Rural Fire Department at Community Bank of Pendleton in care of Traci Summerfield.
