Charles H. Patten, 94, formerly of La Grande died Sunday August 27th at Blossom Valley assisted living home in Wenatchee, Washington.
A service will begin Friday, Sept. 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Daniels-Knopp Funeral & Cremation Center on 7th Street in La Grande. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Charles was born in La Grande on November 6, 1922, the son of Harvey and Teresa (Castle) Patten. He was educated in La Grande, graduating from La Grande High School with the class of 1941. On September 26, 1943 he married Ethyl Marie Stein in La Grande.
They moved to Spokane for a period of time before moving to Baker where they worked for Leo Adler in his magazine agency before returning to La Grande. They owned and operated Patten's Market which later became Red Barn Market. After selling that business they owned and operated C & E True Value for many years in downtown La Grande until they retired.
He was president of the La Grande Downtown Merchants Association, member of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Knife & Fork club and the Rusty Wheels car club. He enjoyed restoring antique cars and fixing up houses to sell.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Rodney and Nancey of Wasco, OR, Kathy and Terry Cobb of Wenatchee, WA, Alan and Linda Patten of Peachtree City, GA, and Pamela and Ward Walker of Damascus, OR; 16 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Keith, sister Sarah Powers and his wife of 69 years, Ethyl, who died on November 7, 2012.
