Charles "Charley" Edmund Hughes, 63, of Boise and formerly of La Grande, died March 23 at Sunbridge Retirement Home in Meridian, Idaho.

Charley was born Dec. 24, 1944, in Nampa, Idaho, to Charles and Gladys (Farr) Hughes. He moved to La Grande to attend school and play football at Eastern Oregon State College in 1963. Upon graduation, Charley taught school in Meridian before moving back to La Grande to open Charley's Sports, which he ran for 10 years.

Those who knew him say Charley had a contagious smile. They said he always had a kind word and a moment of his time for anyone that needed it.
