Charles "Chuck" J. Hazen, Iii

December 20, 1939 — July 15, 2008

Charles J. "Chuck" Hazen III, 68, died July 15 at his home with his family by his side.

Private remembrance services will be held later.

Chuck was born Dec. 20, 1939, in Pittsburgh to Charles J. Hazen II and Dorothy Ely Hazen. Later they moved to Portland.

His passions were motorcycles and old cars. He owned and operated a motorcycle shop in Portland where he built and sold Harley Davidson parts. He customized and b built a chopper that took Grand Sweepstakes three years in a row.

In the late ‘80s he found a 1956 Buick Century convertible in a junk yard. In one year to the date he completely restored the car. He entered it in a car show and took the top two trophies. He was a member of the Pacific Northwest Convertible Club for several years. He went to many cruise-ins and won several trophies.

He put his car restoration on hold for a short time while he custom built for his friend, Tom Feeney, a stretch limo, which became the only monster truck limo around.

After that was completed, he moved to Union in August 1990. He purchased the old Pebble property and fixed up the old place. He opened a second-hand store named CC Second Hand, which lasted 17 years. He loved to go to David Kramer's auction, and the tow of them became good friends. He liked the unusual stuff that maybe no one else had. Those who knew him say he will always be remembered for his stories.

He is survived by his companion of 22 years, Cathy Tauscher; mother, Dorothy Dahm of Portland; brothers, Walt and his wife, Linda, of Dallas and Ed and his wife, Norma, of Boring; sons, Chuck Jr. of North Powder and C.J. of Virginia; stepchildren, Mike Ferguson of Union and Patti Ferguson of La Grande; mother-in-law, Ruby Allen of Union; brother-in-law, Paul Allen and his wife, Liz, of Union; 10 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles J. Hazen II; daughter, Charlette; nephew, James; brother, Bob; and his aunt, Peg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grande Ronde Hospice.
