Cassie Louise Vann, age 85, of La Grande and formerly of the Lewiston, Idaho area, died Sunday August 15, 2004 at a local care facility.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 20, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at the Hillcrest East Cemetery with The Rev. Mark Schlessman of the La Grande First Christian Church officiating. Fraternal services will be under the auspices of Hope Chapter #13 Order of Eastern Star. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
Cassie Louise Cone was born on April 25, 1919 at Hillsboro, Oregon, the firstborn of the three children of Fred M. and Eva M. Cone. She spent her early life in Washington State, graduating from Woodland High School in 1936. She moved to Portland, Oregon where she worked for the Greyhound Company.
She married Justin Ammer on December 7, 1946. Justin was a pharmacist and they lived in Craigmont, Idaho where they owned and operated the drugstore. Their son, Gregory J. Ammer, was born on June 4, 1953. Justin Ammer died in October of 1956. Cassie married Charles Vann on September 19, 1959. They moved to La Grande in 1965. Charles worked for Boise Cascade and Cassie worked for Gilco, Inc. Charles Vann died on May 16, 1997. Cassie has continued to make her home in La Grande, as has her son Greg.
She is survived by her son, Greg Ammer of La Grande; granddaughter, Tara Echave; great grandson, Jay Jay Echave; two step-children, Carole Wagner of Craigmont, Idaho and Larry Vann of Ashland, Oregon; eight step-grandchildren; nine step- great grandchildren; her sister, Cathy Williams of Woodburn, Oregon; her brother, Roger D. Cone of Edmonds, Washington.
Cassie held membership in the First Christian Church in La Grande and was an active member. She was also an active member of Hope Chapter #13 Order of Eastern Star and was a member of the Laurette Alpha Omnicron Sorority.
