Carol Spence Conrad

October 21, 1921 — February 15, 2010

Carol Spence Conrad, 88, formerly of Enterprise, died Feb. 15 after a few years of declining health in Portland. A service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bollman Funeral Home. A private vault interment will follow at Enterprise Cemetery.

Carol was born Oct. 21, 1921, the youngest of three children, to William H. Spence and Mina E. Allen Spence in Enterprise. Both sets of her grandparents settled in the Wallowa Valley in the 1880s.

She grew up on a small farm south of Enterprise along with her older siblings, Virginia and Bill. She attended school in Enterprise and graduated with the Class of 1939. She attended college at EOCE in La Grande where she obtained her teaching certificate.

Carol moved to Portland to start her teaching career. She taught there for many years, most of that time in the Parkrose District.

On Aug. 15, 1964, she married a fellow teacher, Ed Conrad. They made their home for many years in Southeast Portland. The home became a place for Thanksgiving gatherings as well as a place to stop and just visit. Those who knew Carol and Ed say they were always welcoming to friends, especially relatives and friends of relatives.

Carol and her siblings grew up attending the Enterprise Christian Church. When Carol moved to Portland, she attended Mallory Avenue Christian Church. Later on, she attended Kern Park Christian Church.

Survivors include sister-in-law, Betty Spence of Dallas; several nieces and nephews; cousins; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 38 years, Ed; brother, Bill; sister, Vi; brother-in-law, Stewart; nephew, John; and great-niece, Kristen.
