C. Benjamin Ross

July 8, 1937 — January 10, 2010

C. Benjamin Ross, 72, of Foley, Ala., and formerly of La Grande, died Jan. 10 after a lengthy illness, with his wife by his side.

A graveside service was held Jan. 14 at Barrancas National Cemetery with Hospice Chaplain Rev. Michael Bonham officiating. Ben was born July 8, 1937, to William E. and Clara Ross in La Grande. He lived in La Grande for around 50 years and worked at Rachau's gas station and as a cook at The Long Branch. He also managed the downtown La Grande Texaco for many years.
Ben served eight years in the U.S. Navy.

Those who knew him say he was a true outdoorsman. Ben loved hunting and fishing in this area, especially Starkey and Hilgard. He also liked to garden at his home in Foley, and was especially fond of the roses he planted.

He greatly admired John Wayne and as a youth, he was an extra in the Western movie, "Pillars of the Sky."

Ben is survived by his wife, Audrey Ann; children, Lauryn, Billy, Coral, Randy, Jeff, Tom, Dianne, Troy, Casper and Mark; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William E. Ross and Clara Ross; two brothers, Ed and Don; and two sisters, Helen and Lucille.
