Bryce 'Doc' E. Miller

April 17, 1921 — February 14, 2015

Bryce E. 'Doc' Miller, passed away February 14, 2015 at his home in Union at the age of 93. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the S.E. Miller Gym in Union. Interment will follow at the Union Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center. Those who wish may make contributions in his name to the VFW Post 4060.


Doc was born on April 17, 1921 in Callaway, Nebraska to Eliza Adelia Lichtenberger and Hope Ephram Miller. He was the seventh of twelve children, eleven of whom grew to adulthood. His father passed away when he was 13 years old but he grew up close to aunts and uncles and worked for them doing chores and farm work. He graduated from high school in 1938, then in 1939 he and a brother came to Eastern Oregon. During WWII he joined the Army Air Corps. He was a Purple Heart recipient and after his honorable discharge he returned to Eastern Oregon where he met Pearl L. Wright of Union. They were married December 6, 1947 in Baker, Oregon. To this union were born 3 daughters and 2 sons (as well as a still born daughter). He worked for Boise Cascade for 28 years, retiring in 1983.

Doc was a lifetime member of VFW Post 4060 in Union where he served in many positions including Commander. He was honored as Grand Marshall of the Union County Veterans' Day Parade twice.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Ella Streeton, Erma Miller, Mary Klump and Doris Shanley; brothers, Howard, Leo, Woodrow and infant brother Gerald; son Charles E. 'Eddie' and great granddaughter, Shanyn Miller. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Pearl Miller of Union, along with daughters, Cindy Carper (Doug) of Elgin, Patsy Wichman (Steve) of Albany, Oregon and Sandi Norton (Rick) of Union and son, Ron Miller of Union; 14 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren with two on the way and 1 great-great granddaughter; brothers Ray of Tigard, Morris of Riverside, California and Norman of Mason City, Nebraska, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
