Bret James Proffitt, formerly of La Grande, died Monday, July 22, 2024 at his home near Colton following an extended battle with cancer. He was 62.
Bret was born on September 4, 1961, in Pendleton, the third child of Dale and Rosaleen (Troyer) Proffitt. The family moved to La Grande in 1967 where he attended schools. While growing up he was active on swim team and qualified to go to the Junior Olympics. He taught swimming at the Molalla High School. He also enjoyed skiing, fishing and hunting.
In his adulthood he became a devout Christian, took courses to become a minister and led several youth groups. He worked with handicapped young men and worked with Hospice patients. He enjoyed rafting, kayaking, hiking for eagle feathers, and watching his grandchildren play sports.
By trade he was a carpenter and brick-mason and was certified in asbestos removal. He worked on several projects in the Portland area, including serving as a foreman on the remodel of Lloyd Center and construction of the Nike Campus and many other projects.
Survivors include his son, Ryan Proffitt of Estacada, 2 grandchildren, Peyten & Deagan, parents Dale & Rosie Proffitt of Colton, brother Alan Proffitt of Sandy, sister Carol Knopp of La Grande, 2 nephews, 3 great nephews , several cousins, aunts Beverly Hartell of Klamath Falls, Colleen Matthews of La Grande, other relatives and many friends and a host of adopted families.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, aunts and uncles.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Estacada Funeral Chapel., Estacada, Oregon. Private interment will be at the Elwood Cemetery in Colton.
