Bob Winter, age 82 of Island City, died, Thursday, June 22, 2006 at St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Washington. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 14, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the La Grande Country Club.
Robert "Bob" Winter was born on May, 21, 1924 the son of Fred and Lillian (Klein) Winter in Sandoval, Illinois. After high school Bob enlisted in the United States Army where he served during World War II and the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the military, Bob began a career working for the Government. He was stationed in numerous countries including, Italy, Japan, England and Germany. It was during a tour in her hometown of Carlisle, Pennsylvania that he met and thirteen days later married Mae Fetter and the marriage lasted sixty years. After many years of service with the United States military and his employment as a civilian executive assistant at the Umatilla Army Depot, Bob retired and the couple settled in Island City in 1983. Bob truly had a gift, the gift of drawing which included his outstanding sketches and caricatures of many local friends and family members. While in the service Bob designed a crest pin that is still worn on military uniforms to this day. During his time at the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center in Walla Walla, Bob shared his gift of sketches with the patients and staff at the center. Currently the cancer center has many of his art pieces on display. Bob was a member of the La Grande Country Club. He enjoyed his art work and loved to golf. He will be truly missed.
Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Mae Winter of Island City, daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Chuck Fetty of Pueblo, Colorado; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother Rudy Winter of Medford, Oregon; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. His parents, three brothers, Wayne, Leonard and Fred Winter and a grandson, Robert Fetty all preceded him in death.
