Robert Joseph Ottersberg, 54, of La Grande died March 5, at his home of natural causes. A memorial service was held March 9.

Mr. Ottersberg was born on May 5, 1949, to William and Margaret Ottersberg in Columbus, Neb. He graduated from high school in Pueblo, Colo., attended Southern Colorado State College and graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in forestry and landmanagement. He earned a master's degree in soil science from Montana State University, and ran a business, Cordilleran Services, in La Grande.

He was past president of the Oregon Society of Soil Scientists, treasurer of the Native Plant Society and involved in the care of Gangloff Park. He enjoyed native plants, fly-fishing, gardening, backpacking with llamas,Irish and contra dancing and Tai Chi. His was a gentle spirit.

Survivors include his wife, Dorene of La Grande; his parents of Pueblo; children, Brock, Landon and Mac Ottersberg, all of Bozeman; brothers, Dan and Bill Jr., both of Colorado Springs, Colo., Martin and Jeff, both of Pueblo, John of San Francisco, and Steve of Durango, Colo.; sisters, Sue Haslinger of Colorado Springs, Mary Vermersch of Paris, France and Janet Smith of Pueblo.

Memorials may be made to the Native Plant Society in care of Dick Kenton, 1805 U Ave., La Grande 97850.
