Bob D. Hines, 81, of Island City, passed away on Wednesday, March 23, in Walla Walla, Washington. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm on Monday, March 28, at the Church of Christ in La Grande.

Bob was born on December 4, 1934 in House, New Mexico to Ben and Helen Hines. He graduated from Fort Sumner High School in Fort Sumner, New Mexico where he met his future wife, Lorene Walker. Bob and Lorene were married January 28, 1953. As the couple grew their family, Bob worked in various construction and oil field jobs throughout New Mexico. After several years, Bob established a plumbing and heating business in Santa Rosa, New Mexico having learned the trade from his father- in-law and becoming a Master plumber.

In 1967, seeking better opportunities for his children, the family moved to Pendleton, Oregon, where Bob worked for Morrison-Knudsen Corporation. In 1984, Bob and his two sons, Robert and Jeff, established their own company, HNS Construction, specializing in rock crushing. He continued working in this profession until his eventual retirement in 2010.

Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf and especially spending time with his ever-growing family. He was noted for his gentle compassion, broad experience, practical wisdom, reasoned judgment and endless generosity.

Bob is survived by his wife, Lorene and by his children, JoAnn (Loren) Christenson, Darlene (Robert) Fleming, Becky Mitchell, Jeff (Michelle) Hines, and Tim (Misty) Hines, as well as by his 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Robert, and by his two brothers, Ben and Lloyd, and his two sisters Pauline and Willa.
