Billy Jr. Sanderson, age 79, of Island City, died peacefully September 25,
2008 following multiple health problems. A memorial service will be held on
Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life
Celebration Center, 1502 7th Street in La Grande. In lieu of flowers the
family requests that contributions be made to the Shriners Hospital for
Crippled Children.
Billy was born in Summerville, Oregon, November 8, 1928, to Willie and
Hallie (Bottles) Sanderson. He attended school for eight years at the Dry
Creek School and two years at Imbler. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the
United States Army where he served as a sharp shooter during World War II
and also served in the Korean War. He married Gladys Nellie Williams on
June 2, 1949 and they remained happily married for 52 years until her death
in 2002.
They had three children, Kristi Sanderson Perry of Elgin, Leon Sanderson of
Dubois, Wyoming and Rocky Sanderson of Milton-Freewater. Billy worked for
various farmers for several years and then for Boise Cascade until he
retired.
Billy was active in the Eagles, American Legion and was a 29th Degree Mason
and a lifetime member of the Scottish Rite. He loved to camp, fish, hunt,
travel but most of all he loved to play pool.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Dorothy Craig and
Evelyn Ramsey and two brothers, Kenneth Sanderson and Donald Sanderson. He
is survived by one sister, Wanda Pointer, his three children and their
families, including ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He has
many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. He will be missed by all who
knew him.
