Betty Jane Hulse

August 9, 1923 — August 25, 2003

Betty Jane Hulse, age 80, of Elgin, passed away quietly at her home in Elgin on August 25, 2003 following a year long bout with cancer.


A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Elgin Christian Church. Private interment was held at the Elgin Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Betty was born on August 9, 1923 in Elgin, Oregon to Bernal D. and Carmi (Holbrook) Hug. She attended school in Elgin and Business College in Spokane, Washington. On October 5, 1942 she marred Gifford S. Hulse in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Following World War II the couple established their home in Elgin where she lived for the full extent of her life. Besides performing the job of homemaker and raising five children, she worked as an accountant with Boise Cascade Corporation for 23 years. Following her retirement from Boise Cascade, she worked as city manager and recorder with the city of Elgin for 8 years from which she retired in 1988.


Betty enjoyed traveling, making two trips to England with her husband during the 1970's. The couple began spending their winters in Arizona in 1988, eventually purchasing a home in Bouse, Arizona. Betty became a member of the Christian Church in Elgin, Oregon at an early age and was an associate member of the Fellowship Baptist Church at Vicksburg, Arizona.


Survivors include her husband, Gifford of Elgin; children Ellen Green of Philomath, Oregon, Rita Morrison of Spokane, Washington, Julia Aylsworth of Yakima, Washington, Carolee Ratzlaff of Orland, California and Jesse Hulse of Simi Valley, California; sixteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, brothers, Bernal Hug of Elgin, Edwin Hug of Gresham and Elwin Hug of South Lake Tahoe, California; sisters, Anna Louise Scafidi of Gresham and Caryl Dawes of Elgin; and a vast number of friends.
