Betty Lee Golden

January 10, 1950 — May 23, 2009

Betty Lee Golden, 59, of Woodburn and formerly of La Grande, died May 23 in Portland surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with multiple myeloma.

A memorial celebration will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Oregon Coast Culinary Institute on the campus of Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay.

Betty was born Jan. 10, 1950, to Donald and Muriel (Lund) Ewen in La Grande. She received her education in La Grande, where she graduated with the Class of 1968. Following high school, she worked at First National Bank.

In 1971, Betty made the move to Portland, where she gained employment as an operations clerk at the Industrial Branch of First National Bank. While at First National, she met Steve Golden. Betty and Steve married July 19, 1975, in Seattle. They remained in Portland until moving to Pendleton in 1977.

On April 30, 1978, Betty gave birth to her only child, Maegan. In 1983, Betty and her family moved to Coos Bay. While in Coos Bay, Betty worked as a data processing manager for Security Bank, and later as a travel agent for Anytime Travel.

In 1985, Betty was elected to serve on the school board for the Coos Bay School District. She served for many years before moving to Woodburn in 2000 to be closer to her family. While in Wooburn, Betty was employed by Pete Ward Travel and most recently, West Coast Bank as a loan operations supervisor.

Betty celebrated life by playing golf, cooking and baking, traveling, shopping and spending time with her family. She also kept very active throughout the years supporting and attending Miss Coos County events.

Betty is survived by her loving husband of almost 34 years, Steve; daughter and son-in-law, Maegan and Troy Zell of Portland; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Betty Ewen of Nashville, Tenn.; sister, Dianne Ewen of Woodburn; step-sons, Daniel and James Golden of Portland; and three grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, Betty's family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Miss Coos County Scholarship Foundation in care of Maureen Everetts, 1475 Juniper Ave., Coos Bay 97420.
