Bernard "Barney" Calvin Olsen

November 23, 1918 — May 1, 2010

La Grande, OR - Bernard "Barney" Calvin Olsen died peacefully, with family by his side, May 1st, 2010.

Barney was born November 23, 1918, in Baker City to Helmer and Anna (Kerr) Olsen, married Winifred "Winnie" Morse in Clarkston, WA in 1942, and in 1976 he married Grace Henderson in Helix, Oregon.

Barney is survived by his wife Grace of La Grande, his children Bonnie and Lyle Roberts of La Grande, Ron and Joyce Olsen of Elgin, Terrie and Tom Lapp of Pendleton, Durinda Fries of Kennewick, and Lynn Henderson of La Grande, 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Barney attended school in Meacham and then later served in the US Navy as a CB during WWII in the Aleutian Islands and Guam.
After his honorable service, he became a life-long carpenter, owning his own successful business for many years, making friends of his customers along the way.

Barney enjoyed carving and making miniature historic cabins and wagons to display and give away to those he loved, enjoyed the outdoors, snowmobiling, hunting (guiding at Red's Horse Ranch), and horseback riding. He and Grace loved to travel after they retired, spending time in Arizona and hosting countless summer camps throughout the Northwest - Barney found friends wherever he went.
Barney devoted his free time to the residents and staff of Grande Ronde Retirement Residence, making his last earthly home a far more enjoyable place for those who passed through its doors.

Barney loved spending time with his family, especially the young, and he will be missed by all who called him ‘Grandpa Barney'.
Barney's wish was that there be no service held, but you may forward donations to the Hospice or charity of your choice in his honor.

Barney was preceded in death by both his parents, his brother, Lester Olsen, his sister, Gladys (Hilyard) Howdyshell, his daughter Billie Jean, and his son Rodney Dee.
