Berna "Jean" Harsin

January 7, 1922 — October 23, 2003

BERNA ‘JEAN' HARSIN, 81, of La Grande died October 21, 2003 at her home in La Grande. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, October 24, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mrs. Harsin was born on January 7, 1922 in Union, Oregon to William and Ida Mae (Irvin) Haefer. She attended school in Cove. She married Ivan Harold Harsin in Weiser Idaho on October 17, 1942. He preceded her in death in 1988. Jean worked at Red's Horse Ranch, was the first Tupperware sales persons in the valley, was a cook at Central School for 14 years and, washed railroad engines at the Old Round House during World War II.

She was active in the Eagles Auxiliary, the UP Old timers Club, the Good Sam Club and the Beta Sigma Phi Society. She enjoyed camping, cooking, sewing, and making crafts. She grew up in High Valley. She and Ivan lived in Pondosa until it closed and then Huntington before moving to La Grande.

Jean is survived by her sons and their spouses, Darwin and Sue of La Grande, Ron and Judi of La Grande, Harold and Sharon of Moses Lake, and her daughter and son-in-law, Naomi and Marvin Shiflett of Union. She was preceded in death by her husband, her grandson, Steve Harsin and her 8 brothers and 2 sisters. She had 8 surviving grandchildren: Peter, Douglas, Denice, James, Kyle, Candy, Tammi, and Michael, 10 great-grandchildren, Zane, Rosemary Vera, Brianna, Brandon, PJ, Elijah, Gabriel, Eric, and Noah, and one great-great grandchild, Austin.

Memorials may be made to Hospice or Home Health in care of Daniels Chapel of The Valley, 1502 Seventh Street.
