Arthur D. "Art" Hallgarth, age 78, of Elgin, died December 1, 2003 at the Grande Ronde Hospital. A graveside service will begin at 11:a.m. Monday at the Elgin Cemetery.
Mr. Hallgarth was born January 16, 1925, to Frank and Stella Glasson Hallgarth in Elgin. He graduated from Elgin High School and served in the Army during World War II. He worked for various mills in the Elgin area piling lumber. On January 9, 1949 he married Dorothy E. Boswell, and in the 1960's he began working for the Union County Grain Growers, where he worked until they closed. He then worked at home on the family ranch.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with wood. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife of Elgin; a daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Mike Hunter of Spokane; a sister, Alma Grimm of Burbank, Washington; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and other relatives. A sister died earlier.
