Annabel Redding Shankel

April 6, 1916 — July 14, 2008

Annabel Redding Shankel, age 92, of Union, died July 14, 2008 at a local care center. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19th at 3:30 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in La Grande. A committal service will be held in California at a later date.

Annabel was born on April 6, 1916 in Murphys, California, the first of 5 children born to William L. and Marion (Schaeffle) Redding. She graduated from Bret Harte High School in Altiville, California and San Joaquin General Nursing School as a registered nurse. She worked as a county school nurse for 30 years in both Calaveras and Amador counties. On February 16, 1938 she married Arthur Mark Shankel in Reno, Nevada. Upon retirement they moved to Union, Oregon to be close to their children and grandchildren. Her family was her main focus. Arthur preceded her in death.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Pat Shankel of Union and Dr. Bill and Mary Ann Shankel of Kuai, Hawaii; four grandchildren, Mike and Laura Shankel of Melba, Idaho, Eric and Naomi Shankel of Boise, Idaho, Kathy Mills of Union and Jeremy Shankel of La Grande; six great grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Tuechert and Patricia Danielson, both of California; brother, Marion Redding of California and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her great granddaughter, Nicole Shankel and a sister, Rosemary.
