Anna L. Scafidi

January 22, 1932 — November 15, 2010

Anna L. Scafidi, 78, of Gresham and formerly of Elgin, died Nov. 15 after a long illness. A celebration of life for Anna Louise (Hug) Scafidi, 78, formerly of Elgin, will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Elgin Christian Church. A dinner will follow at Elgin Community Center.

She was born Jan. 22, 1932, to Bernal and Carmi Hug in La Grande. She grew up in Elgin and graduated from Elgin High School.

She received her bachelor's degree from Eastern Oregon University and later, her master's degree in education from the University of Oregon in Eugene.

She married James D. Carlson, and they had two children, Dee Ann and Duane.

She came to Portland in 1956 and was a school teacher in the Parkrose School District for 20 years. In 1976, she married Joseph Scafidi and they moved to Gresham in 1978.

She was a member of AAUW and was a volunteer for the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, Oregon Trail Chapter, and for Volunteers Involved for Emotional Wellbeing of Seniors. She was active with in Snowcap Community Charities, enjoyed sewing and hiking, and Tai Chi at the Gresham Senior Center.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph Scafidi of Gresham; daughter, Dee Ann Branchini of Damascus; son, Duane Carlson of Hailey, Idaho; step-son, Richard Scafidi of Portland; sister, Caryl Dawes of Portland; and brothers, Bernal Hug Jr. of Elgin, Edwin Hug of Gresham and Elwyn Hug of Lake Tahoe, Calif.
