Alva A. Smart

April 2, 1910 — December 11, 2004

Alva A. Smart, age 94, of La Grande, died Saturday, December 11, 2004 at a local care center. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 16 at the La Grande Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Tim Gray officiating. A private interment will be at the Grandview Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th St., La Grande.

Mr. Smart was born on April 2, 1910, the son of William Perl and Clara Beatrice (Merry) Smart in Irma, Alberta Canada. At the age of 15 he moved from Canada with his family to Morocco, Indiana where he attended school and would later graduate from high school. On February 26, 1935 he married Mildred L. Miller in Evansville, Indiana. Mr. Smart worked as a welder during World War II. Together the couple moved to moved to Missouri, Arizona, Southern and Northern California before finally settling in La Grande in 1997. Alva enjoyed gardening, spending time outdoors and most of all spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Smart of La Grande; son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Ellen Smart of La Grande; daughter Ethel May Thompson of Lawndale, California; sixteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie Bingham of Black Canyon, Arizona; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two sons, Donald and Floyd Smart, six brothers and sisters.
