Allan Ward Rainsberry

May 9, 1925 — November 25, 2010

Allan Ward Rainsberry, age 85, of Union, died November 25, 2010 at the Grande Ronde Hospital. A funeral will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center in La Grande. Interment and military honors will follow at the Union Cemetery.

Allan was born on May 9, 1925, the son of Cecil Ward and Opal Celina (Leith) Rainsberry near Brocket, North Dakota. When he was 8 years old his parents moved to Montana. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 in Kalispell, Montana on October 8, 1943. During his tour of duty with the 10th Mountain Division (Ski Troops) he served in combat in central and northern Italy. He was honorably discharged February 6, 1946. After completing college at Eastern Washington College at Cheney, Washington he joined the Washington National Guard. His combined military service totals 35 years and he rose to the rant of Lt. Colonel. His service decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, European Theater Medal with two campaign stars, American Theater Medal, Victory Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Good Conduct Medal and other badges and commendations.

He retired from Federal Civil Service where he worked as a field agent for the La Grande Social Security office. He was twice past Commander of High Valley Post #4060 in Union and was District 6 Commander in 1985. He was active in Veteran's affairs since 1978. He belonged to several other organizations including the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Elks Lodge and Eagles Lodge. Allan was also involved with the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Lenora Rainsberry of Union; six daughters, six step-children; one sister; one brother; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
