Alice Leora Hollingsworth

December 26, 1921 — February 17, 2003

Alice Leora Payne Hollingsworth, age 81, of Elgin, died Monday, February 17, 2003 at her home in Elgin.


A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 21, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at the Elgin Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Richard Rasmussen conducting. Dedication of the grave and interment will follow at the Elgin Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley and Friday from 12:00 until service time at the church.


Mrs. Hollingsworth was born on December 26, 1921 to James Leander and Olive Velate (Manning) Payne in Trenton, Cache County, Utah. She was the third of five children born into the family. She came to Oregon at age 7 and returned to Utah two years later to live with her Dad and 2 sisters. Her parents separated at this time and she kept house for her Dad. On June 3, 1939 she married Raymond Hollingsworth in Trenton, Utah and they moved to Oregon. She lived in the La Grande and Elgin area for the rest of her life.


Mrs. Hollingsworth enjoyed her memberships in the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Pythian Sisters. She served many offices including President and served as Most Excellent Chief twice. She was a devoted wife and mother. She worked for many years of her life working in the grass fields, at Eldrige's Meat Company, as a cook at Fancy Dan's Restaurant and waited tables for many years at Odies Steak House.


In her later years she became active in her church and enjoyed reading the scriptures. She also enjoyed embroidery, the mountains and the ocean. Most of all she loved her family and she spent all the time she could with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.


Survivors include her children, Lee Ray Hollingsworth of Elgin, Joyce Challis of Umatilla, Deanna Hylton of Elgin, Danise Wheeler of Molalla and Viki Davidson of Mulino; sixteen grandchildren; thirty four great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Her parents, brother "Jack" James K. Payne, sisters, Mildred Witty, Helen Trump and U Vada Payne, infant sisters, Sybil and Beverly and her lifetime companion and love of her life, Raymond Hollingworth all preceded her in death.
