Alford G. "Al" Hartley, 87, of Elgin, died Thursday, March 29th at the Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center in La Grande.
A graveside service, including Masonic rites, will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 3rd at the Cove Cemetery in Cove.
Al was born on May 4, 1924 in Cove to Ray R. and Eva Mae (Baker) Hartley. Al was raised and educated in Cove, graduating with the Cove High School class of 1943. On June 3, 1944 he was married to Leone Fay Simmons in Cove. The couple moved to Elgin in 1956 where they bought a ranch which they operated until their family was raised. Al went to work for Boise Cascade as a millwright in 1968 and retired in 1986 after 18 years of service.
Al was a 60+ year member of the Cove Masonic Lodge. He was a charter member of the Cove Sportsman's Club and had been a member of the La Grande Country Club. Al enjoyed getting fire wood and the couple made several trips to Alaska to visit their daughter. Leone preceded him in death on April 17, 1994.
Survivors include children, Fay Winterton of Republic, WA, Carolyn Partidge of Elgin, Gene and Patty Hartley of Summerville, June and Les Travis of Meridian, ID; 8 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; a brother, Clark Hartley of Hershey, Nebraska; a half-sister, Alcie Steinborn of Zelah, WA; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Besides his parents and wife, Al was preceded in death by his step mother, Hazel and four step sisters, Georgia, Pearl, Donna and Celeah.
Friends who wish may make contributions in memory of Al Hartley to the Shriners Hospital for Children and may be mailed directly or in care of Daniels-Knopp, 1502 7th Street, La Grande, OR 97850
